I have learned several things during my first quarter in English. I have learned several new things and I’ve been reminded of many things I’ve forgotten. The three main things I have learned include the writing process, how to be prepared for college, and many grammar rules. I have never been a huge fan of English classes but I will be forever grateful that my counselor put me in the 12th grade English class that she did.
At the beginning of the year when I was speaking with my counselor about the classes I needed, I asked about alternative classes to earn English credit in rather than taking normal English 12. She strongly recommended that I took the normal class because my interest in going to college. She assigned me to Mr. Pitcher saying many students liked him and we both hoped that I would for once enjoy an English class. I can say now that she made the correct decision because I have learned so much already.
The first few days of class my first period class (English) jumped right in and got to work. We started reviewing standard elementary grammar. At first I thought it was ridiculous and didn’t think anyone would be getting anything out of it. It turns out I was completely wrong. We went over all sorts of grammar rules that I had completely forgotten about or had no memory of learning before. Even though we didn’t spend a ton of time on grammar or reviewing I definitely wouldn’t trade anything I learned.
After we were done reviewing things in class we moved on to sentence structure and proper essay writing. My first large assignments at school were for English doing essays. I wasn’t excited at all when we were given our first essay, but I’m glad that I took the time to do it. After doing peer reviews and having you look over it I felt like I had learned a lot. I can now get my ideas out faster and create far better essays then I could before the start of the quarter. My favorite essay that we did would probably be Remember the Titans. It was a great movie and I feel like a learned several things from watching the structure closely and writing an essay on how they put the movie together.
By far the most important things I have learned so far are about college. I know it’s not called college prep but it really is great at getting me ready. I have learned far more about college requirements and expectations in this last quarter then I have in the rest of my life. I’m very excited to be entering college next year and I would have had no idea where to start and when to prepare if it wasn’t for this class and the things I have learned. I now have a general idea about where I want to go and how I plan to pay for it. The guest speaker we had that came in and talked to us about college helped me to decide that I want to either go to SNOW or SLCC to receive my associates’ degree and then transfer over to the U or a different university.
Another thing that this English class has helped me with is my typing skills. I have always been a fairly fast typer but after all of the essays I have written in this class I am now even faster than before. I’m not sure how many essays I have written or how many words have gone into them but if you include the rough drafts I typed and all the mistakes I went over than I think it’s fairly safe to say that I have written a lot. I don’t regret all this typing though because it has helped me improve my writing, typing, and thinking skills.
In conclusion, I have learned several things during my first quarter in Mr. Pitchers English class. I’m extremely happy that I was put in the class, and that I actually put forth the effort to complete my assignments. My writing skills are much better as well as my grammar skills. If I hadn’t gone through this first quarter I would have no idea what I’m was doing when it came to college. The essays have helped me become a much faster typer now and I can get my thoughts out faster too. To sum it all up in one sentence: I have learned a lot.
